Three mosquitoes, three different problems
A good mosquito programme attacks the breeding water first and the adult population second — never the other way around.
- Aedes aegypti — bites by day, breeds in clean water, carries dengue, chikungunya and Zika.
- Anopheles — bites at dawn and dusk, breeds in stagnant fresh water, carries malaria.
- Culex — the classic nuisance biter at night, breeds in dirty water and drains.
Step 1 — source reduction
- Empty plant saucers, paint tins, broken pots and unused buckets weekly.
- Clean and seal overhead and underground water tanks.
- Clear roof drains and AC drip pans.
- Add a tight mesh over any open water storage.
Step 2 — larviciding
For unavoidable stagnant water (society sumps, ornamental ponds, construction trenches), professional teams apply biological or chemical larvicides — products that kill the larvae before they ever become biting adults. This is far more cost-effective than fogging.
Step 3 — adult control
Thermal fogging, ULV (ultra-low-volume) misting, and residual indoor spraying are the three workhorses for adult mosquitoes. They are most effective at dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes are active. Fogging alone, done without source reduction, is a temporary fix.
Frequently asked questions
Are the chemicals safe for children and asthma patients?
Yes — modern formulations like deltamethrin and lambda-cyhalothrin at registered concentrations are low toxicity to mammals. EntoRid teams advise a 1–2 hour ventilation period after indoor misting as a precaution.
How often should we fog the society?
Pre-monsoon (April–June): every 15 days. Monsoon (July–September): every 7–10 days. Post-monsoon: monthly. Combine with larviciding for sustainable control.
Do plug-in repellents and coils help?
They reduce biting in a single room but do nothing to the population. Treat them as comfort tools, not a control strategy.
I have a dengue patient at home. What should I do immediately?
Inform your local health centre, install mesh on doors and windows, sleep under a net, and request an emergency residual spray of the home and 200m radius from a licensed team.
